Acute Injury or Chronic Injury?

Acute Injury

An acute injury is one that is very recent (typically less than 10 days old.) Acute injuries often result in swelling, warmth and decreased range of motion of the joint. Pain is generally described as throbbing and sleep is commonly disrupted (depending on the severity of the injury).

Chronic Injury

A chronic injury is one that lasts longer that the typical healing time frame of 3 months. Though the word “chronic” gets a bad rap, it often means there are other contributing factors and nervous system sensitivity.

We help you move beyond a diagnosis by evaluating and treating the source of your pain. After a thorough assessment of your body and how you move, we customize a treatment plan designed to efficiently get you back to pain-free living.

Why Physiotherapy?

Do you have any questions?

We’ve got answers!
Both TENS and IFC work to modulate your pain through similar mechanisms. Receptors on our skin are stimulated through the gentle vibrations created by TENS and IFC electrodes. This non-painful stimulus blocks the entry of painful stimulus and prevents a pain message being sent to our brain. Generally, TENS works to provide pain relief and IFC works to provide an anti-inflammatory effect.
Both heat and ice can be useful in the management of an injury however in certain circumstances one may be better than another. In general, use ice with new or acute injuries to calm down signs of inflammation (heat, redness and swelling). Use heat to treat older or chronic injuries and muscle tightness.
Electrical muscle stimulation is a modality used in the treatment of pain and swelling, in the recruitment of weak or underutilized muscle and/or to promote tissue healing.
